THE RELIABLE BOOK
The Bible claims to be the accurate word of God (2 Tim. 3:16). If we are to accept this claim as fact, then we must be persuaded that, though the Bible was written by many different men over a time span of hundreds of years, it tells one consistent story. The evidence must be sure and solid that the Bible writers were able to agree on the message they put forth. And this is precisely the case.
The Holy Scriptures were written by about 40 different men over a period of about 1600 years. The men who took part in the writing were vastly different from one another, coming from all walks of life: monarches (David, Solomon), fisherman (Peter, John), military leaders (Joshua), tax collectors (Matthew), preachers (Moses, Isaiah)—just to refer to a few. Some of the writers were highly educated (Paul, Luke), while some were ignorant and untrained (Peter, John). It was written in different time periods (from around 1500 B.C. to A.D. 70, approximately) and in different languages (Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek), and yet, when brought together, the Bible tells one story in remarkable unity that all forty of the writers could not have come up with on their own had they all sat down and brainstormed together.
The Bible contains one general theme—the salvation of mankind through the death of Jesus Christ—which could not have been contrived by any mere man or group of men. The only explanation for such perfection is that these men were guided by the Holy Spirit as they wrote, which the Bible also claims (Jn. 14:26; 16:13; Eph. 3:3-5; 1 Cor. 2:13; Eph. 6:17).
Everything that we need to know about God, how to get right with God, and how to stay right with God, is there, revealed plain and simply, in the pages of the Bible. We should remember that the Bible is still around after many who have criticized it are dead. It will still be around when current critics are dead.
Those who say that the Bible is a book of fairy tales and myths can be counted on for one thing: they have not read it. If one makes an honest investigation of the book, they will come away knowing that it is from God. Its content is simply beyond the range of human ability. Check it out and see for yourself.
