TRUST HIM…DON’T TRY TO UNDERSTAND HIM
One area where we get into trouble in our relationship with God and our thinking about God is in our desire to understand him. God has plainly said that he will never be understood by the people he has created. Job 11:7 asks, “Canst thou by searching find out God?” In other words, do you really think that you will ever understand God?
If you could fully comprehend him then you would be as knowledgeable as God himself. That was what Eve and Adam fell for in the Garden of Eden. Satan told them they would be like God if they disobeyed him, so they did. The desire of man and woman to be as knowledgeable as God goes back a long way. And it causes us to stumble because we insist on understanding things that our finite minds cannot comprehend. God said, “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, and your ways are not my ways, declares the Lord. As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts” (Isaiah 55:8-9).
The way to stop sabotaging your relationship with God by a requirement that is a figment of your imagination, since it is impossible, is to remember that God has never said to understand him. He has said to trust him. If you knew everything you would not have to trust him. But those who choose to trust him, please him. It is very important to God that you trust in him.
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart. And do not lean on your own understanding” (Prov. 3:5-6). Remember that and your life will be so much better.
