RANSOM

Jesus stated that his life was given as a ransom for his people (Matt. 20:28). If a person is held captive and someone pays money for their release, that is ransom money. We are held captive by sin. Jesus’ blood is the ransom. He paid the price to rescue us from our bondage to sin.

Paul wrote to Timothy that Jesus “gave” himself as “a ransom for all to be testified in due time.” (1 Tim. 2:6). The concepts of ransom and redemption go together, and it was by Jesus’ sacrifice of himself that both occurred. “Jesus gave himself for us so he could pay the price to free us from all evil and to make us pure people who belong only to him—people who are always wanting to do good deeds” (Titus 2:14).

Through his sacrifice, Jesus died in our place, paying the price for our sins. That is what ransom is.
