TRUST IN CHRIST
“Therefore, brothers, since we have complete confidence to go into the holiest by the blood of Jesus, by a new and living way, which He has made for us through His body, the veil, and having an High Priest over the house of God, let us draw near with a pure heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water. Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering, for He who promised is faithful” (Hebrews 10:19-23).
Under the New Covenant, the problem of sin has been taken care of through the work of Christ. The New Covenant has been sealed by the blood of Christ (Matthew 26:28). When we receive the remission of sins—thanks to Jesus’ death at Calvary—His blood makes us perfect and we are therefore able to enter into the presence of God just as naturally as Adam and Eve did in the beginning. “Certainly, according to the law of Moses, almost everything was cleansed with blood. For without the shedding of blood, there is no remission of sins” (Hebrews 9:22).
God accepted Christ’s payment for our sins, and this is how we know we are saved (Matthew 20:28; Romans 5:8-10; Ephesians 5:2; Romans 4:25; 1 Thessalonians 5:10). God has promised this and we believe it. But there is also the matter of knowing God’s help and strength with us every step of the way as His disciples. The Psalmist describes the Lord as the supreme helper of His people, and His help cannot fail (Psalm 121:1-8). Is this the way you think of God? Do you recognize that He is with you every step of the way? Is He by your side in the morning? Are you in His presence when you recline at night? Does your help come from the Lord? When we get to the point where we accept God’s care—moment by moment—we will be successful disciples.
God offers help each step of the way. He is touched by how we feel and we are invited to come to Him for help anytime we need it (Hebrews 4:15-16). He is there to help us even when our faith is weak (Matthew 14:25-31). Disciples must trust that He will always be there to extend a hand.
The word trust means to put one’s confidence in someone or something. It has to do with knowing exactly how someone will react to your problems. It means being absolutely persuaded that someone will do right for you and help you. God has never let anyone down who put their trust in Him. He will never let down anyone whose trust is in Him. The only way to be a disciple of Christ is to trust completely in Him. “The Lord is good, a stronghold in times of trouble. He knows those who trust in him” (Nahum 1:7).
