HE CONTROLS THE STORMS
Peter once walked on water in Matthew 14. He saw Jesus doing it, and he wanted to do it. There was a great storm on the sea at the time. Jesus told him to come to him on the water, and Peter did it. Peter walked on water. And as long as he was looking at Jesus, he did fine.
But when he took his eyes off of Christ and focused on the storm around him, he became afraid, and began to sink. He cried out to Jesus to save him, and Jesus immediately did.
But there was no need for him to ever be afraid, and Jesus told him so. We do the same thing. We take our eyes off of God and focus on the problems and the circumstances of life. That is when we lose faith. We have to stay focused on Jesus.
God controls the storm. Jesus, on another occasion, rebuked a storm while he and the disciples were on the water, and caused it to cease (Mark 4). This proved that he was all-powerful.
It did not explain why the storm started in the first place. God allowed it, but we are not told why God allows all the things that he does. It is none of our business. Our business is to trust in him.
If God would allow a storm to come up to attack a boat that his Son was in, then we should not be surprised when he allows bad things to happen to us. But the disciples asked a question that expresses what you and I need to understand: “Who can this be, that even the winds and the sea obey him?” They knew that this was no ordinary man. And they would soon learn that he was God in the flesh. The Almighty—the all-powerful God. The God in whom we can put all of our trust.
